Porat, who was born in Cheshire, England, on July 20, 1957, was of Jewish ancestry. When she was a small child, she relocated to Cambridge, Massachusetts, where her father, Dr. Dan Porat, worked at the Harvard University Physics Research Department. Following three years, they then relocated to Palo Alto, California, where her father spent the next 26 years working at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. Porat was a bright woman who graduated from Stanford University with a bachelor’s degree in international relations and economics and from the London School of Economics with a master’s degree in industrial relations.
